Sage Abbott’s The Nerd & The Ex-Con is a compelling story that beautifully intertwines themes of redemption, love, and the power of second chances. The characters are vividly portrayed, each bringing their own unique strengths and vulnerabilities to the narrative, making it easy for readers to become deeply invested in their journey.

The story centres around the unlikely pairing of Scott, a nerdy, introverted character, and Griff, an ex-convict seeking a fresh start. Their relationship is the heart of the book, showcasing how two seemingly opposite individuals can find common ground and build a meaningful connection. Scott’s intelligence and kindness provide a stark contrast to Griff’s rough exterior and troubled past, that hides a deep sensitive and caring core, creating a dynamic and engaging relationship that evolves naturally throughout the story.

Griff’s efforts to reunite with his estranged son, Jay, adds an extra layer of emotional depth to the narrative, as readers witness Griff’s determination to make amends and his desolation at being rejected. However, Griff’s attempts are complicated by Jay’s friendship with Scott. This friendship creates a complex web of emotions and loyalties, as Griff must navigate his feelings of jealousy and protectiveness while trying to rebuild his relationship with his son. Scott, caught in the middle, must balance his growing feelings for Griff with his desire to support Jay.

Scott’s past trauma with his ex adds another layer of complexity. Having been hurt deeply in a previous relationship, Scott is initially hesitant to open up and trust again. His journey towards healing and learning to trust again is portrayed with sensitivity and nuance. Griff’s patience and understanding play a crucial role in helping Scott overcome his fears and embrace the possibility of a new, healthier relationship.

Sage Abbott’s writing is both engaging and heartfelt, with a perfect balance of humor, tension, and emotional depth. The dialogue between Scott and Griff is sharp and authentic, adding to the overall charm of the story. Their romance is tender and genuine, developing at a pace that feels both realistic and satisfying.

One of the standout aspects of The Nerd & The Ex-Con is its exploration of personal growth and the importance of forgiveness. Griff’s journey towards self-acceptance and redemption is portrayed with sensitivity and nuance, highlighting the challenges and triumphs of starting over. Scott’s unwavering support and belief in Griff’s potential underscore the power of love, understanding, and acceptance. Jay’s interactions within the story enriches the narrative, adding to the themes of forgiveness and starting over making the story even more compelling.

The Nerd & The Ex Con is powerfully narrated by a 'new to me' narrator, Shannon Gunn and Iggy Toma. For the first third of the book I was impressed by Shannon's low growly tones, but the first smexy scene he narrated .... holy smokes! The steam was thick in the air, it was quite an experience!  Iggy Toma was of course his usual brilliant self, voicing the POV of the sometimes confident and sometimes insecure Scott. Shannon Gunn and Iggy Toma were a great combination and really brought the full emotional rollercoaster of tears, laughs, and ultimately smiles to the story.

Overall, The Nerd & The Ex-Con is a must-read for anyone looking for a well-written romance that delves into deeper emotional truths. Sage Abbott has crafted a story that resonates with readers long after the last page is turned, proving that love can indeed conquer all.
